Yesterday as I wandered around the Park I visited one of my favourite places, a rather wild area with a very old Elderberry tree in it. On the way I noticed the tree surgeons removing dead branches from tall trees. When I arrived to say hello to my tree I found it had been sawn off at the base and the glorious tangle of mustard coloured branches was no more. I thought of David Hockney who found a stand of trees he had been painting through the seasons had been felled. I expect the tree will shoot from the base when I visit again in the spring . It was the first tree I drew in detail as I began my residency at the Park and I painted summer and winter versions of it. I also took many photos so have a good record of my lost friend.
